Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds by David Goggins - Review

SUMMARY:

For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare - poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-disciplinemental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a U.S. Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force Tactical Air Controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events, inspiring Outside magazine to name him "The Fittest (Real) Man in America."
In Can't Hurt Me, he shares his astonishing life story and reveals that most of us tap into only 40% of our capabilities. Goggins calls this The 40% Rule, and his story illuminates a path that anyone can follow to push past pain, demolish fear, and reach their full potential.

MY THOUGHTS:

David Goggins is a well-known motivational speaker for a reason. He can really make you hold yourself accountable. He has been through hell and back time and time again and overcame every physical and mental obstacle that life threw his way. David Goggins was a man down on his luck who suffered through a traumatic childhood. Goggins refused to succumb to a life of poverty. He refused to stay overweight and unhealthy. He pushed himself beyond his limits daily and accomplished more than I can fathom. You will hear stories of his childhood, BUDS training for the Navy SEALS, and some grueling athletic experiences.

If you're wanting to improve your physical health, push your limits, maximize your full potential, and overcome any obstacle or traumatic experience in life, then this book is worth reading. He is brutally honest and really makes reflect on your lifestyle. He encourages you to step out of your comfort zone in order to grow. He doesn't allow you to accept and live the "woe is me" lifestyle.

I've also listened to the audiobook, and I highly recommend it! The narrator, Adam Skolnickhere does a phenomenal job and there is added discussions throughout with David Goggins himself, like a mini podcast between chapters.

SOME OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES:

Your entitled mind is dead weight. Cut it loose. Don’t focus on what you think you deserve. Take aim on what you are willing to earn!”

“I thought I’d solved a problem when really I was creating new ones by taking the path of least resistance.”

“We live in a world with a lot of insecure, jealous people. Some of them are our best friends. They are blood relatives. Failure terrifies them. So does our success. Because when we transcend what we once thought possible, push our limits, and become more, our light reflects off all the walls they’ve built up around them. Your light enables them to see the contours of their own prison, their own self-limitations. But if they are truly the great people you always believed them to be, their jealousy will evolve, and soon their imagination might hop its fence, and it will be their turn to change for the better.”

“The most important conversations you’ll ever have are the ones you’ll have with yourself. You wake up with them, you walk around with them, you go to bed with them, and eventually you act on them. Whether they be good or bad. We are all our own worst haters and doubters because self-doubt is a natural reaction to any bold attempt to change your life for the better. You can’t stop it from blooming in your brain, but you can neutralize it, and all the other external chatter by asking, What if?”
